Dismantling
1. Lift the car (use a vehicle ramp if available).
2. Remove the wheels.
3. Disconnect pad wear sensor wires if fitted.
4. Untie the brake hose and use a brake pedal depressor to hold the brake pedal down to shut off the system.
5. Dismantle the brake caliper.
6. Dismantle the brake disc and brake pads if you wish to replace them.

Brake Caliper
The brake caliper is the assembly which houses the brake pads and pistons. The pistons are usually made of plastic, aluminium or chrome-plated steel. First, it acts either as a bracket to support the brake pads on either side of the rotor or to support the caliper bracket itself — there are other designs, but these are the two most common. Second, it uses pistons to convert pressure exerted on the brake fluid by the master cylinder into friction on the rotor.
